ABSTRACT

Sensors and measurement systems are playing an increasing crucial role in the automotive industry. Studies state that the average number of sensors embedded in a car is currently more than 100 and novel measurement tools are introduced every day. Such a huge impact is leading to the definition of new data acquisition paradigms and architectures for what concerns the measurement devices as well as for the whole distributed data collection. In this context, performance evaluation turns to be crucial in the vehicle design and production phases as well as for the optimization of driving. At the same time, system requirements are notably different than the ones defined for other IoT application scenarios. Indeed, low latency and high reliability and availability should be the main drivers for smart measurement architectures for automotive rather than low cost or low power. Novel tools and technologies are then required to achieve day-by-day higher safety and security levels, providing at the same time better results in terms of environmental impact, vehicle performances and drivers comfort.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS

Alessandro Pozzebon received the MSc in information engineering, with a focus on the radio frequency identification (RFID) technology applied to cultural heritage, and the PhD from the University of Siena, Siena, Italy, in 2006 and 2012, respectively.
His PhD thesis was on the use of RFID technology for environmental monitoring of coastal erosion phenomena. He is currently an Assistant Professor with the Department of Information Engineering and Mathematics, University of Siena, where he teaches in the Laboratory of Internet of Things.
His main research interests include the development of applications based on Low-Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN), Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), and RFID technologies in several different application fields, from healthcare to cultural heritage and environmental monitoring.


Ada Fort received the Laurea degree in electronic engineering, in 1989 and the Ph.D. Degree in nondestructive testing in 1992, both from the University of Florence, Italy. She is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Information Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, University of Siena, Italy.
Her interests concern the development of measurement systems based on chemical and ultrasonic sensors and the development of automatic fault diagnosis systems. Recently, she has been involved in the study of random number generators based on chaotic maps.


Marco Mugnaini got his Ph.D. in Reliability Availability and Logistics, University of Florence, Italy, 2003 and the Laurea Degree (110/110 cum Laude) in Electronics Engineering with major in Non Linear Automatic Controls, University of Florence, Italy, 1999.
Currently he is Associate Professor at the University of Siena Italy. He has been appointed as faculty and Professor at the Electrical and Electronics Technology Dept. at the Higher Colleges of Technology Abu Dhabi, UAE in 2012 - 2013. From 2005 to 2012 he was Assistant Professor at the University of Siena (Manager of the electronics training lab.), University of Siena.
He was employed as Product Safety Engineer at General Electric (GE) Power System Oil and Gas Division with the responsibility of leading the design for safety of five production sites (AC Compressor, Gemini, Rotoflow, Thermodyn, PII), Florence, Italy, from 2003-2005. He also acted as Consultant for Borri Industrial Power Solutions S.p.A. 2002-2011, for Astrid Energy Enterprises S.p.A. 1999-2000 and for CETACE, Magnetek S.p.A. 1999-2000 in the areas of reliability for electronics and mechanics. He got the Certification as Labview Associate Developer, Green Belt Certified, CAP (Change Acceleration Process). He is author and co-author of more than 165 papers in International peer reviewed Journal and conferences and of 5 national and international patents.
